BookSlash vs Trotto

BookSlashvsTrotto

Open-source go links
with a managed home.

Trotto is a great open-source go-links project. BookSlash is what teams reach for when they want the same memorable shortcuts plus a managed canvas — invoicing, time tracking, sitemap audits, kanban, embeds — without standing up DNS, hosting, or an extension of their own.

The short version

Three reasons teams switch.

  1. 1

    Same shortcut behaviour. Type b/wiki, b/deploy, b/oncall and land in under 40ms — without self-hosting a service.

  2. 2

Managed audit logs, SSO, custom domains, and a multi-tool canvas behind every shortcut. Trotto leaves all of that as an exercise.

  3. 3

Free for personal use, $5/user/month on Pro or $4/user/month billed yearly. Trotto is free if you self-host; the operational cost of running it is the trade-off.

Self-hosted vs managed

Trotto is open source — you run the service. BookSlash is a managed product on a Cloudflare-backed edge.

Self-hosted is a real cost

Six things you do not have to build.

Open source is great until you remember someone has to keep it running. BookSlash gives you the same wedge with the operational floor already in place.

Managed edge resolution

Slug redirects resolve at Cloudflare’s edge in under 40ms p50, globally. No autoscaling group, no Kubernetes operator, no on-call rotation for the link service.

Audit logs from day one

Every share, slug edit, and permission change tracked. 90-day retention on Pro, 365-day NDJSON exports on Enterprise. Trotto leaves this to you.

A canvas behind every link

Boards with invoicing, time tracking, sitemap audits, kanban, charts, mind maps, embeds. Trotto stops at the redirect.

Built-in invoicing and time tracking

A Harvest and FreshBooks alternative inside the same product as your team shortcuts. One vendor, one bill, one onboarding.

Sitemap audits across pages

Crawl any URL, get a visual sitemap, and score every page on accessibility and SEO. A Slickplan node, on the same canvas.

Real analytics, not log greps

Per-slug clicks, top users, dead links, conversion paths — without joining four log files together.

Every CSM in our team has b/<account-slug> committed to muscle memory. Onboarding a new hire used to take two weeks; now it's an afternoon.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

Migrate when keeping Trotto running starts costing more than $5 per teammate per month — usually somewhere between 10 and 30 seats. The operational tax (auth, SSO, audit logs, edge resolution, on-call) tends to win out for teams who care about uptime.

Yes. Trotto exports a JSON or CSV of your go-links. Drop the file into BookSlash → Settings → Import and BookSlash creates a slug per row, preserving names. The b/ prefix replaces go/ for end users; the rest stays the same.

Yes. The browser extension intercepts the b/* prefix without any DNS configuration on your network. Shortcuts also resolve from Raycast and Spotlight via the BookSlash desktop integration. For a custom prefix at your own domain, claim b.your-co.com on Pro.

BookSlash is managed-only by design — that is the operational floor we are charging for. If self-hosting is a hard requirement for compliance reasons, contact sales: we sometimes set up dedicated single-tenant deployments for Enterprise contracts.

Some Trotto teams stay with Trotto for that reason and that is a fine choice. BookSlash publishes our SDK, browser extension, and CLI as open source; the core service is closed. Read /security and /legal/subprocessors for full transparency on the stack.
